Is there any difference in the width of cranks between MTB and road bikes? By width i mean the gap from pedal to pedal...it just seems that my knees are pointed inwards a lot more on the roadbike compared to the mtb. Is it my imagination?

The short answer is yes, the long(er) answer is 'it depends'.

Basically, to fit three chainrings and a big tyre between as short a chainstay as possible, the cranks have to be wider. The distance you are talking about is commonly referred to as q-factor.
