[#1042736]

I've just tried to take my hollowtech Race Face deus cranks off my bike and run into a problem. The drive side crank has what I think is a self extracting bolt, ie you unscrew the bolt, the bolt stays put in the crank arm and pushes it off the axle. Only this time the bolt came out by and the crank arm remained attached to the axle. I'm a bit confused, it didn't do that last time!? do I need a crank extractor tool now?

If it was like mine, there were 2 'bolts', the crank bolt itself which holds the crank on and then another cap sort of thing that goes over the top. When you undo the crankbolt as it tries to unscrew it pushes on the cap which should then push the crank off.

1/ Have you lost the outer cap thing / not put it back on?

2/ Are you undoing the right one?

But if you cant get it to come off normally - you can use an extractor anyway.

just had another look, it is as you describe but the end or top of the cap has snapped off! so I can remove the main bolt but most of the tread of the cap is stuck in the crank. I think with the bolt removed I should be able to pull off the crank but it's not budging, even with rubber mallet type persuasion! then there's the question of how to remove the remains of the cap...

there is an 8mm and a 10mm on the drive side. the 10mm needs to be tight down. undo the 8mm and the crank will pull. its a clever system. if i remember right the 10mm top cap is reverse tapped. the 8mm can be tricky to get going, at work we sometimes have to use an extender arm on the allen key! good luck

infact it might be bigger than a 10mm now that i think about it. but it still all works the same x

you will never get it off with a mallet mate. its cranked on there. if the threads are goosed take it to your local shop.

thanks guys, definitely a shop job now. just hope a £7 bolt failure isn't gonna cost me £150 worth of cranks!

Had a similar problem to this , used the 8mm and the 10mm caps thread stripped as I undid the inner bolt.
It might be a bit of a bodge but I slipped the HT2 tool over the crank arm and undid the BB cup to push the arm from the spindle.
I've since installed the crank on another bike and everything still runs smooth.

yikes! your putting your frame in danger taking the cup off. those threads were never ment to pull cranks. its probably fine but i wouldnt want to risk it. shop job me thinks. good luck
