I've just used some old brake mount bolts I had in the spares box

I just used two M6 bolts cut to the correct length. Cut them with M6 nuts in place (ooh er!) and then unscrew the nuts (ooooh er!) to clean the threads. This is especially important in this case as you're screwing into aluminium.

I seem to recall reading on here or somewhere that this doesn't work for the road cranks as the heads are too big...

Yes, they are M6 or M5 bolts depending on the crank - find your exploded diagram here to check exactly which and how long.

If you don't want to mess about then just get LBS to order from Madison - 1-2 quid a pop

Some shimano cranks use small heads I think, I gave the original bolts out of an SLX crank to someone on here for another model and the thread was correct but the head wouldn't fit. And from the size that'd also rule out most standard cap bolts too.

BTW I have got 9 spare - Its for an old XT crankset but they fit if a tiny little bit proud (maybe about 1mm) if you get stuck (not the ones from screwfix) - the website I got them is down so can't get them from there - these are tapered IIRC.

But as said above to avoid disappointment get them from you LBS ๐Ÿ™‚

job done. avid caliper mounting bolts are perfect, shimano's won't fit because the head is too big. headset top cap bolts will fit but they are too long. this was on a deore crank.
