I bought a second hand Marin Rift Zone for my son, who is 11. We were out in the woods at the weekend and another rider said that he would be better off with shorter cranks. The Marin has got 175mm cranks and I am thinking that 160mm cranks would be better.
My question is though, in which way would the cranks benefit him? And would the 160's be better, before I buy a set?

The shorter cranks will be better as he won't be over extending his knees.

Yes, in a word - imagine the movement of his legs/knees in relationship to his seat etc.
