[Closed] Crank Bros, Look or Time Clipless pedals?

[#2089707]

I am looking for a new set of clipless pedals and can't decide which ones!

Having used Crank Bros in the past I always liked the float as I found Shimano SPDs hurt my knees after a hour or two.
However the Crank Bros annoyed me with their poor build quality and the constant rebuilding required - I much prefer fit and forget!!
Are the 2010 models any better??

The Look and Time pedals seem to have the same retention system and sideways float but not having used them before I am not sure what they are like and whether they are a better option than the cranks.

Suggestion and comments welcome!!

Time for me, but then I've never even seen a look pedal.

They appear similar in action to Time pedals, though there's something in the review linked to in the image I've posted about ghost releasing.

i came from CB to time. cost a few quid to change over 5 bikes, but a snapped spindle on a set of candy sl, following the seemingly constant replacement bearings and servicing, persuaded me it was worth it.
initially i found the times a little tighter, both in retention and clipping in/out, but quickly got used to them. ( and probably both the pedals and cleats wore in a bit too ).
the aliums aren't too grippy if you're resting a foot on them unclipped. the atacs are better in that aspect. i also have the 'z freeride' ones on my bouncer and they're great. very supportive - more so than mallets.

OK, I've seen one now ๐Ÿ˜› but not used them, have used shimano's & m8 has CB's. I've had Times for years (had three working sets), had my first failure the other months, one of the 'clips' snapped on one side of the pedal (very confusing to work out what was going on, as it still 'looked' fine) but it'd had a very long & hard life.
I swapped to Time's, as the (older) shimano's didn't handle mud at all well, and am happy I avoided CB's due to there intensive(ish) maintenance requirements (easy to do though if you get the kit). The Time's have been flawless, I've replaced the bearings every couple of years, it's very easy and you can get the bearings from any suppliers for penny's.

The 'Looks' look very similar but I can't comment on there long term life

I use Time pedals ('Freeride Z' just now, or something equally gnarrr that I'm unworthy of). They're excellent and last forever seemingly. My knees like them a lot better than Shimano too.

Apparently, and I've never experienced it myself, the 'ghost-release' problem with Look pedals, and also Time ATAC (not ROC ATAC), is to do with the bars on them being one-piece. As in, the front bar on one side is a part of the rear on the other side. This means that a small pedal strike, or 'too much' power can release them as the springs aren't as strong.
