Between 165mm & 175mm? Looking to get a set of Saint's off CRC, 165mm are £20 cheaper than the 175mm... always nice to save some cash 🙂
Pretty sure my current XT cranks are 175mm, will I notice the change in length do you think?
cheers 🙂
you might, you might not, you might notice the shorter length and prefer it, or you might not.
shorter length - this would mean potentially less power (?) being generated per stroke (due to leverage I guess)? Also, perhaps a bit less chance of pedal strike I guess?
I reckon I'll take a punt...
can you sleep if there's a pea under your mattress ?
No you won't
fair enough... leaves me £20 to put towards the hideously expensive Fat Alberts I want to try out as well... 😆
I noticed when I went from 170 to 175. But then I've got long legs. I can imagine 165 feeling very twiddly.
I've got short powerful legs... in all honesty, I'm probably better suited to shorter cranks anyway!
I can notice the difference. My mtb has 165 cranks which I've run for years and am very happy with. BMX cruiser which I bought a couple of weeks ago and is now on ebay 🙄 has 175mm cranks - fine for a singlespeed as I feel it does allow me to get a bit more power down . . . and last week's budget f/s purchase (another going the way of the Big E) has 155mm cranks spec'd due to its low bottom bracket - fine on the flat but a burger to get up to any sort of speed or putting the power down when climbing even with the same gearing (and bike weight) as my Slopestyle.
you'll need a longer seat post
I had a bike proper bike fitting session (video analysis etc) and the conclusion was that because I have short femur for my height I could manage with the exisiting 175mm cranks but if I were to get replacements I'd be better going for 170mm. This was because I had to run the saddle quite far forward on an in-line seatpost in order to get the ideal position with the knee-cap over the pedal axle centreline when crank arm at horizontal forward. As for the leverage effect can't be much different to running tyres of a different rolling radius.
psychle, i asked you this the other day but you may not have noticed. when are you next planning a london to brighton offroad ride and can i please come?
If they fit which it sounds like they will, the main thing you will notice is catching the cranks a lot less.

Of course you can! Always better to have company 🙂 Haven't made any plans for the immediate future, probably give it another go at the end of June... shall drop you an email when the plan comes together (may well post a thread on here as well, make it an epic 'London Pootle' 😉 )
great skills - i finish exams on june 7th and so will be free for biking outings from then on. 🙂
165mm cranks ordered... shall let ya'll know if I notice anything different!

Schweet... good luck with the exams! Will be in touch (you're Islington/ North London based aren't you?)
I've just gone from 172.5 to 180 and can't tell the difference.
islington/hackney border, exactly. cheers!
You'll only notice the difference if they're for a singlespeed IMO.
Well strangely enough, the only time I noticed that my legs were sort of flapping about a bit was spinning up a slight hill in a low gear. On singlespeed it's just all good. (I'm one of those that just has 1 bike and sticks another 17 gears on it for days out in the Lakes etc.).
I believe shorter cranks could encourage you to spin more? (Might be better for the knees).

According to that, you're supposed to have a leg length of somewhere near 35" to be ideally suited to 175mm cranks. Personally I'm looking forward to moving from 175's to 170's on my Pompino fixie once the current BB dies...
I use 165mm on my track bike, 170mm on the fixie, 175mm on my mtb and 180mm on the s/s. And yes, there is a big difference in ride feel for me.
165mm on an mtb is definitely at the vertically challenged end of the spectrum... 😉
well... I'm 5'8" with a 32" inseam... according to that calculator thingo, I should go with 166mm cranks, though I know these things are hardly scientific. Had no issues (that I'm aware of!) running 175mm cranks on all my bikes, guess I'll find out soon if 165mm suits me better!
