Had a tumble today in the snow, bars dug in a bit and rotated a bit in the stem. Got everything straightened back up and noticed the lacquer near the clamp has cracked and a bit had peeled away.
Not likely to be structural damage, or not worth the risk?

Bother. Took the bars fully out and they are fubar - huge divots on the back side of the clamping area.
Time to go shopping :-/
Oops! I won't comment further!
hmmm just ordered som carbon bars
would this have happened with alloy??
Yes.
only if your stem bar bolts were not tight enough like the OP
dirtyrider - yes and no. Yes, they might not have moved if they had been tighter, but they were done up to torque. Crashing exceeded that.
so what torque wrench is good?
Well I borrowed this one
