Shimano. Buy which fits budget, but you won't go wrong with SLX or Deore, you will save a minimal few grammes with XT and more grammes on XTR.

I would definitely say shimano. I have deore cranks in black on mine with a single chainring up front, 9 speed though. Bars and stem have been changed for sunline ones in gunmetal but other than that it is exactly the same.

A couple more pics are in my bike parts for sale folder.

I am splitting it down (unfortunately) to sell as parts (apart from the frame and possibly the fork) along with a second bike i have already stripped down. But it will probably get rebuilt again one day ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks

How do you determine what crank length crank arms to choose ?

Absolutely love mine, very reluctant strip down. Don't miss 3 rings up front at all. Occasionally i think i could do with a bigger ring to go that bit quicker on the flats but i just enjoy bimbling on it when i need to. I have 175mm cranks on mine (i think), have used 170mm on other bikes, personally haven't noticed any difference.

10 speed 3 ring xt on mine off the back of a cheap wiggle offer on full group sets.

175mm cranks are fine on mine with very few catches on rocks.

175mm when it was 8 speed, 175mm when it's 9 speed ๐Ÿ™‚

I have some rather 'period' ISIS cranks, currently some Truvativ ones as they look better than the Race Face set I have.
1x10, but about to go back to single speed now I have another geared bike again.

Imo I'd go for a set of RaceFace Atlas or Turbines with a Narrow Wide single ring mated to a Shimano BB to keep it alive n kicking and keep costs down.

I went 1x10 on mine to avoid any more chain suck/damage to the frame ๐Ÿ˜†

You might as well just ask everyone what their favourite make of crank is ! It's got very little to do with your make of bike ๐Ÿ˜‰

Without knowing what colour you want, how much you want to spend, it's not easy to say what's best.

If your leg in-seam is about 32" or more, I'd say go for 175mm. In general, people tend to grind higher gears on MTBs and longer cranks are better for getting the leverage. I run 175mm on my MTBs and 172.5 on road bikes where I spin gears more.

I honestly can't say which make is better. I have RaceFace, Shimano and SRAM chainsets and like them all. I like the fact they can all use the same BBs (only difference is that SRAM needs a GXP bearing collar)

Not that it matters what I did, but on my Stiffee, I invested in a Hope stainless steel bearing BB, 2nd hand RF Atlas cranks and a new stainless On-One 34T chainring and a RF Atlas bash ring. It'll all last forever (like the frame), so I'm happy ๐Ÿ™‚

EDIT - I agree Suggsey - the short chainstays on these frames make chainsuck a real problem. If going for a double, avoid anything largish like 42x28, stick to 36x22

I had 2x9 SLX on mine. Was good as far as ratios etc went but chainsuck was an issue as mentioned. Slightly warped outer ring was a possible suspect though.

Its currently stripped in shed, but if I was rebuilding I would go 1x10 with clutch mech no question

Hi peoples
Bikes about done apart from drive so I've started looking into it. I am partly tempted to go with a Shimano xt m780 10speed triple but there is part of me that is interested in going to a double chain ring up front. The riding I do is tracks some offroad and road too. A big verity... Now looking at the Shimano xt m785 10 speed double there is options of 38.24t 38.26t 40.28t hows best to decide what Togo for?
Bit stuck with all this as its new to me.

Help!!!

Thanks
Tom
