anybody any views on the new 456 as against a new cotic soda - struggling to work out which to buy as there are few reviews on either of the new frames

It's not exactly the comparison you're looking for as I’ve not ridden the Cotic Soda, only the Soul, but the geometry is the same between the two. Also I have the older Lynskey built Ti456 not the newer Van Nicholas imitation, sorry I mean version.

My thoughts are about half way down:

Thanks - just struggling to make my mind up - obviously buying the soda is a serious outset of funds - if they hadnt changed the 456 from Lynskey there would not have been a debate but that bike is no longer available and I am not sure about Van Nicholas -

I don't blame you really. I doubt there's anything wrong with them and they still come with a lifetime warranty, but it's the way Van Nic say that their 'bikes' are all handmade in their factory in Holland.

Sure but that's not the same thing as your frames being welded in your factory in Holland is it? The frames are, let's be honest, welded in China. I don't see any reason why they can't be open about that so it makes me wonder what they're trying to hide.

I'd say that if there'd been no debate in your mind as to a Lynskey built Ti456 being the bike for you, then really what you should be doing is buying a Ragley Ti as that's the most natural successor to the Lynskey Ti456 IMO.

They're somewhat different bikes.

The ti456 is aimed at rather more gnar than the soda, IMO.

I've not got a soda, nor ridden one, but it does have a 120mm limit for a reason. Paradoxically, for all-roundness, the Ti456 I do have rides best at 120mm too.

Yep - I guess its trying to find that bike that will allow you to do a bit of Gnar and also the 24 hours - I ride a scandal at the moment and its does a bit of everything - At 50 I am looking for a bit more comfort in a hard tail

Well, TBH, I don't think the the Ti456 is particularly compliant at 'average' or bimbling trail speeds - Nor was the steel one that it replaced. However, at speed, in chop, all of a sudden it goes all silky hard to explain really.

Would a Lynskey Ridgeline-26LT be closer to the old Ti456 in terms of geometry? :

I'm going to plug the new Soda though.
I don't think anyone has had one to review yet :

Interesting use of the word bimbling but I like the idea that when it goes faster it just goes silky - If the new 456 was the same that that would be the bike for me -

Codger 26,Hi! I have one of the last original TI456 in size 16 I purchased from On One back in January I could sell if you were interested? The bike has been built up, but has had very little use. I would describe the frame as MINT! Please come back to me!

At 50 I am looking for a bit more comfort in a hard tailAt the end of the day Weather it's made of Ti,steel or whatever it,s still a hard tailail, if you want more comfort a short travel FS like an Anthem might be a better bet. I do have a Ti hardtail (Global TH1) but depending on the terrain I would take my Turner 5 Spot, I turned 50 in June so I have an idea where your coming from.

I think StuE has a point. Codger (now I understand the name!) what was the thinking behind sticking with a hardtail as opposed to going for a full suss?

I'm a soda rider, and I do everything from enduros to Wales and the lakes on it. As long as you build it up reasonably strongly there isn't much it can't do at 120mm. I put bigger tyres on for more gnarr applications, and maybe drop the post a bit, but that's all. The thing about the soda is that it is really comfy and a blast to ride on singletrack. I've had longer forks in it (mine's a 2009, so can take 130s), but frankly it's happiest at between 110 and 120 in my opinion. I haven't ridden a 456, but I have ridden a Ragley ti, and they couldn't be more differently natured. The Ragley is a great bike for technical climbing and descending, but I kept falling off in the singletrack (which might say as much about me as the bike). All depends what you're going to do with it most.

On an aesthetic note, I reckon the Soda just looks "right", even in a big size, which even the 456's mum would struggle to claim for it.

i would check the warranty on these frames. whichever offers the best one would be my choice. (check the cracked frame thread) some manufacturers only offer a half price replacement.

Cotic now offers the Lynskey lifetime warrantee, and on-one the van Nic lifetime warrantee IIRC.

Soda rider here. Awesome bike.
Built up for racing and comes in at 21.5LB. Fast swooping singletrack is exactly what the bike is built for.
Will be posting some pics soon and all being well you may see it on the Cotic website.

MY TI456 [LYNSKEY] IS NOW OVER 2 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN THRASHED ALL OVER SCOTLAND AND THE LAKES.

SUPERB BIKE AND A STUNNING 'JUST-RIGHT' FIT FOR ME.

If youre spending new cotic money you really need to consider the Cove Hummer

Sorry to add another option, but it really is a stunning bike and perfect on f120's.

Mine is only 22.4lb and built for trail/xc.

The only downside is..... the cankles. Bol has a very nice soda, with the classic cotic soda tapered seat stays. Is the new one the same??

And here it is, freshly blinged. First excuse to post a pic in it's latest incarnation.
[IMG] [/IMG] I can't recommend it enough. I've never riden a bike with a better blend of comfort and punch.

TLR: it's the biggest they make, and believe it or not, it fits me perfectly. The top tube is only half an inch shorter than my old 21.5" Lightspeed. Lots more standover though, and doesn't look like a gate.

Rocketdog: yes.

Another in the mix...Ragley Ti Piglet (made by Lynskey) due early next year. Slightly less gnarr than the Pig and designed around 120mm forks.

Got to be the Soda for me as its just a stunning looking bike. Can i throw another spanner in the works though? what about the Charge Duster Ti? it beat the Hummer in a Ti bikes test not that long ago. I have had a Hummer though and they are superb machines. I had an '07 Litespeed built one but i understand they're built by Lynskey now as well so i assume the chain suck problem they were famed for has been solved? in case anyone doesn't know the Litespeed ones were designed around a 50mm chainline and with people setting the up a standard 47.5 they got severe chainsuck and in some instances a rather nasty hole in the chainstay 😯

I contacted Cove regards the chainsuck issue on the Litespeed version and they recommended using Shimano chainrings especially the middle ring as Race Face rings with the extra ramps caused this.

Is this correct or can you recommend a chainset to prevent damaging the frame?

Stick another spacer in along with the drive side bb cup pebble. i think that should take care of it. that is of course if your using an external type bb. i'm pretty sure the spacers you get with raceface c/sets and bbs' are 2.5 mm. I didn't do that though if i'm honest. i wrapped a bit of inner tube around the chainstay with a number of zip ties and that way if anything got chewed up it was the zip ties. every now and then i had to replace a zip tie but that was it

I ride my Ti456 with 100mm forks. Much prefer it like that to the 120mm I ran it at before. Seems more responsive and livelier. Very fast and climbs superbly. Agree with the suggestion that it is best at speed rather than 'bimbling'.

My 2peneth...
I've had a Hummer and love my Inbred but wanted another Ti Frame because I had to sell the Hummer. I couldn't decide between all the different frames so got a custom made one from XCAD in China for £600.
Its basically the geometry as a 18" On One Summer season with a biovalised down tube like the Hummer and it rides Brilliant.

Haven't ridden the 456 but I love my Soda.
Rides beautifully with 130 and flies with a rigid fork.
It's a comfortable but not flexy frame and climbs like a mountain goat.
Wish I had the skills to match it 😳

Slight hijack ...

Why does the Ragley Ti Piglet need to have a bent lower tube? Bloody ugly that.

Brant, don't you know bent tube is so yesterday? 🙄

Sounds a bit far fetched if you ask me, I've run a RF Evolve XC Crankset on my HJ, don't know how much the frames differ, but didn't have Chain suck until the middle ring was ruined.

Scandals are pretty compliant frames. I suspect you wouldn't find a ti frame much more "comfortable".
