Right have decided on a new bike frame i would like to run it with an alfine 8 setup to, my thoughts were cotic simple an alfine, or soul and alfine, hoping i can run a half link chain and get chain length correct, Trouble is now i dont know which one to choose. simple an alfine option to run ss, or soul and alfine with option to run standard gearing in the summer. Has anybody used a alfine on a standard soul frame without the tensioner? not keen on a chain tensioner. If so any pics? Help me decide as i cant afford the to have them both ,( shame really but thats life..
I used to run my cotic bfe single speed. It has the same chainstay length as the soul. The closest I got to a perfect ratio was with a 33/17 and a half link in the chain, it wasnt quite tight enough so I used a superstar tensioner to tension the chain upwards http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=58&products_id=269
The tensioner worked fine, I think I'd prefer to run it with a tensioner since it doesnt adjust the chainstay length like horizontal dropouts do (one of the reasons I like cotics is the short chainstays)
