Am thinking about getting a CX bike for gentle offroad jaunts that I can do straight from the house, instead of driving 90 mins to go mountain biking for a couple of hours.

But another option is to get some cross wheels and tyres for my Roadrat. Do you think it would stand up to off-road use?

And what hubs/wheels/tyres would you recommend?

I've got equalizer 29 disc rims on my RR. Can't get much more than 28mm with full mudguards, or at least the ones I've got, but probably easy to get much bigger without.

I got it for commuting, trailer dragging (hence always keeping the mudguards on or else the liittle 'uns get covered in muck) and have also found it copes fine with light cx stuff.

mine manages round the easy bits of delamere, though i've never found the perfect tarmac/muddy track tyre so i just use schwalbe land cruisers 35c

got lucky with the wheelset (crc cheapness) - fsa rd460 cyclo cross disc wheelset

Will work fine (as would your mtb, they do work on roads...)

AS above tyre size limitations may be the issue.

I just use land cruisers on mine. They're fine around where I live, where it's pretty rocky, hard tracks and never really deep mud. Roll pretty nicely on road too, with the centre of the tyre being 'semi-slick'. Can pick them up cheap-cheap if you look around too, think I paid £7 each for mine.
