Good stuff Terry, sounds like a good ride you put in!

i did it from Melgarve to Ft Augustus, is perhaps the most grateful I've ever been for big tubeless tyres and long forks, there were a lot of loose wet rocks all the way up and all the way down. Great descent to Ft Augustus though, would love to race down that Megavalanche style!

That must have seemed a long climb coming back from Ft Augustus!

darn tooting - i got a puncture as well - rock just sliced through my 2 ride (ok 150k was covered but still 2 rides) old cross mark

80k and 1500m climbing

did think i would be able to let rip more on some fatter rubber - but would then need a new frame and forks .... 2.1 is the limit on that bike - but it is a race bike - do i feel another new bike coming up ?

someting like a blue pig or a 456 with some revs

Get a Marin Rocky Ridge Terry, simple, cheap(ish) good forks, good frame, light tough and very good on the climbs, although that might be down to the rubber queen out back (or trail king for the homophobes).

You'll be ready for a glasgow to inverness weekender on the 20th June then I suppose?

This is one of those "must do" rides isn't it? Can it be split into 2 days, ie is there a B & B close by the route?

What sort of bike is ideal then?

Would be a very easy two dayer in either direction.

If you started at Laggan then you could stop over in Ft Augustus for the night, if you started in Ft Augustus then you could stop over in Melgarve Bothy for the night (although its accessible by road so expect company!).

Big tyres and as much suspension as you're comfortable pedalling uphill is what you need. One side of the climb is Devil's Staircase-ish in that its several steep hairpins one after the other, although they're all rideable. The other direction is just a long gradual climb.

Bnb and hostels in fort augustus ...

Any bike you can get some fairly fattish rubber on really and probably a 130 fork for max fun.

Did it yesterday on 2.1s and 100m forks

Nice day when we did it about 7-8 years ago. We went from the youth hostel at the top end of Loch Lochy (Laggan YH), up the Great Glen cycle route to Ft Augustus, over the Corrie & down the other side, hung a right at Melgarve & went down Glen Roy to Roybridge. We were meant to head back on the North side of Loch Lochy via Clunes forest but we'd ran out of food, fluid & energy. When we got back to the hostel we'd done 64 miles!

Looks good. I always think the pylons that are there are an eyesore though. How rideable are the zig-zags these days? Last time I was there they were pretty washed out.

I was stuck up there (near the concrete hut) overnight in a blizzard in late July, early August 40 odd years ago. Got sunburnt the next day on the way down to Laggan.

Rode it again about 3 years ago - less zigzags now and there seems to be less of the big rounded rocks.

Always an interesting ride. Wonder if my wee Dahon could do it ๐Ÿ™‚
