I've seen people request a solution to this problem several times and came across this today. Thought I'd share. Android only unfortunately.

The idea is you designate someone as a trusted contact and they can request your location which will be automatically shared on a timer. This seems the perfect solution for people who go riding on their own who have a worried spouse/partner. Very elegant too!
Been using viewranger gps tracker for years as you can use 'buddy beacons', allowing you to add people and track their route. Great for long mountain trips where you often get separated.
A bit like find my friends. Nice of android to catch up.
so now no need for strava premium?
Findmyfriends app.
Garmin connect does it too.
Drac what's the IOS feature that permits this? Curious to know.
Find Friends.
Google Maps on Android used to do this about 10 years ago!
Google+ still does. But nobody uses it.
I assume the phone has to have a data connection for this to work?
So in the places in the UK where it would be most handy, its not going to work?
May be handy for parents spying on kids though
Yeah, I did think if you're somewhere with no signal then you're stuffed.
But if you're going somewhere like that then you'd not assume a cafe at the mountaintop with free wifi would you?
According to the link page, it will give last known location, and no it doesn't need data on, just a signal contact....

A bit like it, but really nothing like it since Find My Friends lacks the timeout feature which is the key feature of the app.

it sends the last location it had data if you are out of a coverage area. Not ideal but better than nothing.
Pretty much what Glympse has been doing for ages
Sounds good,
I currently rely on 'Find Friends' when I've riding solo, my 2 iPhone owning riding mates are on there and my Wife.

Yup it shows you anyway it doesn't rely on a response but they have to be trusted before hand.
Find my friends has exactly the same timeout functionality. It also does location based notifications.

Does it? How do you activate it?
{With apols to Drac if I've been a div!}

Are all 3 dots ever in the same location whilst you are out riding?
In iOS just choose "add" in find my friends (or choose share location from contacts or messages app). You can choose to share for 1 hour, until end of day, or indefinitely. Once you added someone in the app, you get the notify option to set up geofencing notifications
