I'm staying in Coniston Sunday-Tuesday, and actually have Tuesday free on my own, so am going to take my bike with the aim of riding on this day.

So, a 3-4 hour loop starting from the Coniston Caravan Club site ideally, nothing too techy as I'm firmly in the 'xc jeyboy mincer' camp. I'll be on a Trance 29er.

Any suggestions? I've walked extensively throughout the Lakes, but only ever ridden there once, at Grizedale back when I first started riding.

Classic tour of Coniston via Tilberthwaite, Oxen Fell, High Cross, west side of Grizedale, Nibthwaite, Woodland Fell , Torver, up to Walna Scar, then back to Coniston. Very XC, especially now the Nibthwaite descent has been part-sanitised.

If you want more rocks, lakeside track from the campsite to Torver, up Hummer Lane to Broughton Forest, across that on BWs, up the RH side of the stream on a fireroad to Natty Bridge, join the descent down to Stephenson Ground, over to Park Head Road down to Seathwaite, pint in the pub, then push up Walna Scar and back down to Coniston to finish. Utterly classic, and worth doing given the forecast. Lumpy, but nothing desperately techy, and you can always get off and push for a few yards if no-one is looking...

Have a look at Barry Godin's Jennride video which is linked off the front page - that includes the Natty Bridge descent and Park Head Road (just before, and just after he stops for the night) to give you an idea.

Ooh cheers for that, both options look good. Will see what I fancy on the day.
