Looking for calf length toasty socks , Sealskinz without the price tag comes to mind . So what about compression socks ? See More Mile ones on Evilbay for a decent price .

I have no idea about the compression socks but the long Sealskinz socks are absolutely ace in my experience. Well worth the money even if they can look stupid at times due to the length.

Compression socks only work when you also use a magnetic bracelet and add seawater to your drinks.

Those More Mile compression socks are rather thin, they don't do much to actually keep your legs warm.
Cheap football socks are usually better. More Mile football socks are not bad, or Sports Direct etc.

Compression sock benefits during the event are (apparently) minimal, possibly placebo effect.

Post event effects seem to be more positive, stick them on when the pain of running/riding stops.
