[#8270040]

As debated in pub last night...

You're trapped on top of a 2 storey building, its on flames and you need to get off as soon as possible..

For some unexplained reason you just happen to have your big bouncy bike on the roof with you...you look down and you can't hang and drop, as there is a spikey rail that you'll impale yourself on...so what do you do?

A- Run and jump, you're sure to break a leg and its gonna hurt ...alot, but you'll survive

B - you're no pussy, so attempt a death or glory huck to the flat pavement below (luckily the roof is also flat so you get a bit of a run up)

C - curl up in a ball and burn

The obvious answer of D - call Jedi for an emergency skills session via skype and hope he can talk you down is not an option....

So which option would you take, ie would cause least damage?

As you can see, first day back at work has been a slow one....

E : strip cables, outers, hoses, chain, tie them all into a string and lower myself down on it.....

Don't be ridiculous Iain, why would you possibly have a multitool to hand in the above scenario???

G- remove all rebound and play with compression to create a big pogo stick. Bounce and jump to the next roof.

Or B- and pretend you're Danny MacAskill

remove the two longest bits of guttering you can find and fashion stilts and casually walk away...

or try and use the drainpipe to descend to safety assuming it's an older building and not using cheap plastic piping.

Last resort A

I'd use the bike.

Do I have a shock pump to stick more air in the shock? I don't usually* set it up for this kind of thing.

* ever

I hear this sort of thing happens if you frequent flat roofed pubs

Rope made out of innertubes. Lower bike safely to the ground.

Ahh, okay - at first I speed read 'Pub' and 'Flat Roof' and declared it such an unlikely scenario that I couldn't comment but I read it again properly.

Anyway, rather than look for other options I'll play along.

The answer is... B

The truth is, I am terrified of drops, let alone 2 story drops to flat - but you have to consider physics - will I land a 2 story drop to flat and ride away? No, but I'd fancy my chances more than a 2 story run and jump - either way you're going to fall a decent distance to a hard flat surface, but in one scenario you have a small chance to land it, but even if you don't, if you can land on one wheel or or both wheels at one the tyres might flat, the rims may bend, the shock and fork break and you might be pinged off the thing but they all absorb energy - it might make the difference between cuts and grazes and a serious head injury.

Or you could impale yourself on the now broken seatpost, bars and cranks.....

this was basically the crux of the debate...you may get away with it...but I think the opportunity for catastophy is far higher than jumping, ie crumpled front wheel, over the bars and broken neck, closely follwed by impalement on your seatpost..

Wouldn't happen to me however, oh no. I'd land it perfect everytime, maybes even throwing in a bit of whip for effect.

Only danger would be waiting in the flames for a suitable audiance of young ladies to gather until I can show off my skillz...

I'd jump but as late as I could. Too much chance of the bike spearing me and no chance of me making the drop and landing it. Good question, better for those who have landed a few big drops

I'd wrap tyres and tubes around my feet to provide a super-cushioned landing and jump.

Actually, there's a product in there somewhere - someone tell Nike to start a new parkour range.

Edit: If it's a flat roof it might be felted - can I fashion a rudimentary wingsuit and glide casually down?

You know what - I don't think it would even cross my mind to use the bike! I'm reasonably comfortable with the kind of drop you find on a bike park black, but 2 storey to flat - it wouldn't be on my radar.

So if there are no other scenarios available, I'd probably burn!

How far away is the hypothetical neighbouring house?

Front garden with railings and a relatively close pavement would suggest you're on the roof of a terrace... Ride the bike a few roofs down and wait for the emergency services.

This isn't a bawhair away from a 2 story building...

Done with ease....

Granted, not quite to flat but almost..

I reckon its possible with the right bike

Who fancies giving it a go. Is that GW bloke still on the forum?

in one scenario you have a small chance to land it, but even if you don't, if you can land on one wheel or or both wheels at one the tyres might flat, the rims may bend, the shock and fork break and you might be pinged off the thing but they all absorb energy - it might make the difference between cuts and grazes and a serious head injury.

Unless you land upside down. Worst case scenarios on the bike are almost certainly worse.

Probably the best thing to do is jump forwards, land on both feet, try and roll out. Realistically I'm going to knee myself in the face so hard my nose lands back on the roof

It's a hashtag enduro bike right, so hte tyres are like tractor tyres with lots of cushioning and as we're all hip and trendy would be 29er. So I'd pull both off the wheels, put side by side, curl myself up into a ball, wedge myself in and roll and bounce to freedom

I would throw the bike off the roof, jump after it, catch it and mount it just before it lands then ride off injury free.

Bones heal. Bikes cost.

I'd through myself off with the bike on top of me to minimise damage to it.

On the basis that I've fairly repeatedly jumped from 1 storey* without dying, I'd take my chances with the running jump from 2.

I can see the logic of riding the bike and if breaking up to absorb the impact a little, but I still think it's only a 1in10 chance of making it that far and not landing upside down etc. Whereas running jump has a more 9in10 chance of getting that far (before breaking your legs).

*once landing flat on my face after not realising I was actualy walking off a drop in the pitch dark, lots of blood and the mother of all whiplashes but otherwise remarkably unscathed.

Could you not jump off the roof, holding the bike, but with hands cunningly placed over the (previously caps removed) fork and shock valves. Get the timing right and you could have a retrorocket deceleration effect...

On the same logic as I use to justify riding back from the pub, I spend more time on my bike than on foot so riding has to be the best option. Pretty sure I could land rubber down and as long as I'm allowed a box and a full facer and gumshield (to reduce the pain of a stem/face or stem/ball interface) the bike will do more good than harm.

ok, so the full answer is cut up and use the inner tubes to carefully lower my bike to the floor
then grab my imaginary skateboard and land it.

should this ever come up, im glad i already know what to do.

I can just about Huck to flat from a (dropped) kerb so I'm on plan A or C.

Is it a fat bike?

I'd take my chances with suitably balloon like tyres...
