I was just wondering what you guys prefer for your commutes.

Road bike, mountainbike, or other.
Drop or flat bar
Fixie,Singlespeed or gears
Spd's or flats

Varies dependant on length of commute?

Normal (ie. 18 spd) road bike, built from a bastardised bunch of bits, with the wonderful Crud Roadracer mudguards. 11-15 miles.

I use my old mtb with rigid forks amd 1.35 slicks.

Now it's heavy with rack, mud guards and easy ratio.

I only regret using disc brakes that get in the way of mudguard stays.
But I can stop on a coin in the wet rather than road bike 50 feet later...

How many roadies were around in winter?

If it's under 8 miles one way you will be fine on 26 mtb but 8miles+ I would go for something with 700C wheels.

Are you carrying shopping? laptop? consider other uses and whether the the bike can do what you need.

My mtb won't allow me to overtrain as the ratios are for hills and luggage not 11-25 road.

Specialized Tricross Singlecross with slick tyres and full mudguards. Can't imagine why anyone would have a commuting bike without full mudguards!

Geared touring bike with drops, discs, mudguards and rack.

It doubles as a winter training bike, but my commute's too hilly for fixed or ss.

mudguarded 'cross bike - usually with 25c slicks on, unless the weather is being particularly wintery

most of the kit on it is cast offs from the race 'cross bike, to keep the costs down

I don't commute, but I live in a city, so when I need stuff, I take-off and hit the roads on my HT, fitted with road tyres most of the time. Keeps my options open.
A tyre change and the HT is ready for the ST.

WTP BMX.

might as well have no brakes, and in sheffield.

a real skills developer!

also the one (large) gear and inability to sit down does wonders for power in the old legs.

only about 2 miles each way.

Fixed road bike, mudguards, pannier, clips'n'straps, bullhorn bars. Hat & fold up waterproof trousers always in pannier in case it rains (which it usually doesn't). Loads of lights and a bell.

Cervelo S1 with full Ultegra 6700 10 speed group and RS80 carbon wheels for the not so dirty days or Genesis Flyer for the really manky ones.

Alu Hardtail, Pace RC31's, custom 2x9 set up, hydros, 185 discs (ludicrous), 24lbs. No racks, no guards.
Currently on Conti Vert Pros at 40psi in case of more wintery weather, but normally Schwalbe Marathons. It's ace!
About 2.5miles in - 6.5mins! ace. Home is about 3.5 along the river and offroad, takes about 15mins.

Thorn Catalyst, 853 Rohloff. Rack and full mudguards came off when I changed it from an on road commuter to an off road one. Pace carbon forks replaced with Magura Odurs for low maintenance suspension.

An 80s 531 hack road bike with narrow flat bars, spd/flat pedals and Conti Ultra Gator 28mm tyres.

Rack with mudguard and a DIY crud catcher.

It looks rough, but it's quite nice to ride.

Specialized Langster (first generation one) SS road bike running a 48:17.
It's got a set of old SPD-R pedals on it, amazingly the shoes are still holding together but when they die I'll have to get new pedals as well cos you can't buy the cleats any more...

I'm on a F700 Dale, Recon Solo Airs, Deore/LX group, LX wheels, LX discs, Conti Mountain Kings. Picked it up out of the classifieds. Figured killing XT regularly was going to get expensive so a second bike was required. ๐Ÿ˜‰

5 miles off road down the canal. Way less dodgy than the road commute.

Old Man Mountain racks/Ortlieb panniers.

Old skool Ti-Inbred, RC31s, 700c Schwalbe Marathons, Hope Minis, Easton carbon bars n seatpost to take the sting out.

No mudguards, but love the closely fitted ones on hybrids/roadbikes.

Mid 90's steel Marin Hybrid base bike.

Continental Supersport 32mm tyres.
Full mudguards and rack
Pannier
Lights
Flat pedals
Combination lock

Will be changed to single speed when an expensive gears or wheels repair is required. Is also used as the pub/shopping/knocking about bike and does more miles than the MTB and Road Bike put together.
