[Closed] Commuters - side on visibility

[#2037805]

So, we're entering into the lighting up season (hence the long running rear light thread).

As I nearly discovered yesterday, lights front and rear don't light you up from the side (taxi nearly turned right through me).

So, what are people using to make themselves and their bikes more visible side on?

Polaris RBS jacket worked for me.

Reflective vest, ankle bands and wrist bands. Also more than one kind of front and rear light as some are good for front visibility and some for sideways.

I ride a motorbike and at this time of the year I wear an "executive" zip up Hi-viz(£10 ebay).
Sleeves are the important bit I feel. Can be seen all round even with a ruc-sack on.

I was tempted to just lather the entire bike frame in 3M retroreflective tape when I was commuting.

I covered my commuter in these stickers Available from CRC.

They also have a sheet of black stickers available that are quite discreet.

A set of Halo Duel Rail tyres in bright green are good for getting you noticed.

Yes, will be running different types of front and rear lights (one constant, one flashing at each end). I'll also have twinkly LEDs on my lid.

"Black" reflective stickers sound good - means the bike won't look completely gash.

I've got some twinkly Aldi wrist/ankle bands. Not sure if they're reflective, though - reflective better?

Anyone use lights that aim to the side?

Light & Motion Vis 180 & 360's both have flashing Amber side repeaters.

but you have to cut your own shapes.

My L7M Vis 180 gives a good amount of side visibility but I am going to be putting some of the Respro black sticker stuff on my rims to make double sure I can be seen.

I've always thought assymetrically (if that's a word) positioned spoke reflectors are very eye-catching. Never stuck any on my bike though!

Those plastic wheel reflectors that everyone throws away because they're not 'cool'...

Hi everyone, first post for me on this forum.

I use a Hi Vis bike jacket, front and rear flashing LED lights and Hi Vis straps that go around your ankles, the straps have flashing LEDs built in too.

Aldi supermarlet are doing them for a about £3 for a pack of 4.

Cheers

organic355 - I need to get some struff from CRC, so will add a sheet of that, Like the idea of being able to cut it to fit.

Another vote for the Fibre Flare sidelights. I've got one of the Fibre Flare rears as well mounted on the rucksack, it gives great visibility cos it's quite high mounted.

The number of bikes I see at the moment with no lights in dawn/dusk/grey conditions is shocking. I was driving the works van the other morning in drizzle/dawn light and even with the high driving position and huge windscreen, some cyclists are nearly invisible until you're right next to them. They really don't help themselves. 🙁

Those black reflective stickers are good too as is anything reflective or lit attached to the spokes/cranks

Hello massivemtber! 😀 (Waves)

What catches drivers' attention best is something flashing or moving. Wheel reflectors are pretty good; I've noticed them a lot when I've been sat in cars. Scotchlite type ankle bands are good too. As are tyres with reflective sidewalls, although they can be difficult to keep clean.

I also used these last year and they were quite good, but difficult to fit on bladed spokes.

Ah, if only some bright spark would make the Fibre Flare side lights the right size to mount onto the crud catcher fittings on my downtube....

Thoug +1 also for the wheel reflectors.

I think Cateye are doing a fancy 'commuter' wheel set that flashes too.

My lights shine light to the side - both front and rear lights. I also have the spoke reflectors on the bike

THESE are good as well, Electron Backupz.

Useful little emergency light but a couple of years ago I customised a couple of the regular (non-USB-chargeable) ones to thread a reusable zip-tie through them and wrapped them round my ankles. Undo the zip-tie and they'd come off in seconds but they had good side and rear visibility.
