Got my dad some SKS Chromoplastic ones for his last bike, before the bike went missing and they seemed just the job.
So do I buy the same for his new bike, or the even cheaper SKS Bluemels? (little lost on the difference)

Same again. Do the Bluemels come with the quick release and nice stay fasteners?

my commuter has ESGE chromoplastics - the original and still the best

(name changed from ESGE to SKS some years ago)

the clips look the same in the 'small' pictures you can find, though just found [url= http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17072 ]this[/url] thread which suggest the Chromo's are "optimised" for use with a dynamo rear light.
