So, I was lost in my own thoughts this morning on the commute in, vaguely noticing the lovely fields around me, the birds singing, the snails crunching under my tyres, when I was suddenly struck by a bolt of the obvious...

How come fork steerer tubes aren't keyed?

In fact, any type of tube where mounting a stem is a simple and exact job leading to a perfect alignment would be better than the current system surely?

Right, I'm off now to get a cuppa and then have a fettle of my stem so that it is perfectly in line.

Current system works fine, and keying would add costs/weakness

Anyway it's a test oof mental strength - whether a slightly squint stem bothers you or not.

you'd also have bother accomodating different length head tubes, height stems, bar height etc. etc. etc.
apart from that, not a bad idea ๐Ÿ˜‰

someone sent us a hexagonal steerer design agaes ago for the same reason, but the costs and faff aren't worth it. imagine how complex it'd be to work with aheadsets and adapt to different headtube heights. it'd be a major standards revision for a minor set-up benefit. and that's assuming all steerers were keyed to exact tolerances )

You could make a keyed stem and steerer adaptor for ahead systems, for those who adjust stem height quite often or remove the bar/stem for packing, that would be easy and have a small market. over to someone else though, you can have that one!

tie a bit of string to the seat post then pull it tight to the bars in the centre of the stem/bar clamp, you can then see if you stem is straight or not.

but splines would be nice
