Hi - I'm recovering from a broken collarbone and am sure will be back on the bike in a few weeks (I broke it 3 weeks ago). Has anyone got any advice/experiences to impart - and also any exercise that helped your recovery?
Thanks in advance!
Common sense really, take it easy, ride to how it feels not how you think it should be, dont fall on it.
A little off topic maybe but I broke mine in Ibiza in 1997 and didn't get any medical help with it. Healed on its own (eventually) and doesn't cause me any problems these days.
I badly broke my left collarbone a few years ago, I found that swimming was an excellent way to get mobility back and start to build up a bit of strength the whole area. I smashed it into 4 pieces and I remember cleary the cracking noises of the scar tissue freeing up as I started to do a bit of breast stroke and front crawl five weeks in... A few weeks of that and it was feeling much better. Good luck.
Similar situation, similar thread !!

Mine took 3 weeks to stop being complete agony and for the shoulder to pretty much stabilise - it would just drop a couple of inches if I took it out of a sling. After 7 weeks I can put socks on, with a bit of pain, and can get on the turbo trainer. I;ve been told offroad riding is unlikely before the new year.
My second xray on the 16th, hope it's all stuck together or it;s operation time. Fingers crossed your's is not a nasty break.
I broke mine in to 4 pieces at the end of june. I went and had some treatments at these guys www.physionclinic.net and a day under 3 weeks after I did it I was back on the road bike. 4 weeks and I was back xc riding, it was a bit sore to pull up hard but generally fine. 5 weeks in I went to Scotland for 5 days riding and was back at normal place.
I had a figure 8 brace rather than a sling after week 1 and so was able to move it and use it for light things. I'm convinced that moving the arm is better for healing than just having it in a sling the whole time. Anything up to shoulder level for the first 3 weeks was the advice i got.
