[Closed] Come on then, whats the future, really?
Much debate to be had about 29er's, that we "need" dropper posts and 160mm of full suss glory.
But, if you were putting your hard earned into a bike to future proof your riding for the next couple of years whats would it be?
Carbon 29er with Dropper and 140mm fork? Steel 26er singlespeed Carbon fork? 1 x 10? Mismatch full suss?
Let the debate commence...... ๐
I want my hoverbike. we were promised hoverbikes!
The world is devolving into a fiery ball of death!
levitation.
no bike, just cross your legs and float down trails
I'm with TJ on this. Where's my Hoverbike Brant Richards?
Will the hoverbike come with Overdrive 2? I need 30% more stiffness
Steel framed single-speed cross-bike.
Once the zombie plague strikes, and all the oil dries up, you'll want something simple, indestructible, and very very fast.

He's right though.
The zombie plague is on the way once this virus gets out of human control and MUTATES!

Every bike will have a headset size that is randomly generated at the factory.
I get the impressiono this isnt being taken seriously.... ๐
Change is the only constant.....
I'm with clubber on this.
I think THAT is basically the reason we are all into mountain biking.
I think also that I've almost reached this zenith now with my recent build.
Now, if I just went for a ride around the Swinley pine plantations and closed my eyes....
All Mountain (tm) unicycles with 27.4 inches of fully adjustable rebound xbox travel.
Just a hunch.
Dunno, last I checked bikes still had 2 wheels and handlebars. Based on the rate of change from the last 100 years I'd expect a 36.45% increace in unquantifiable marketing by 2017.
I forsee a mixture of good and bad:
Some bunch of morons might decide to introduce more completely superfluous steerer tube standards, just because their marketing department thinks it's "gnarly" and "rad".
Use of the term "colourway" will be punishable by a five year stay in a Siberian gulag.
The future....its a bit like the past but with B.N.G and 17.85% stiffer/lighter/compliant/more jam.
Or........square wheels.
belt-drive, gearbox bikes which weigh the a same as derraileur eqipped machines, and cost the same too...
At the rate SLX and X7 prices seem to be climbing, you'll have a belt drive that'll cost the same as a mid spec derraileur in next to no time ๐
carbon wheelsets at a reasonable price
carbon frames at a reasonable price
those double eccentric pivot things as starting to show on the SB66 and that crazy ibis 29er (imagine a 5 with a single pivot location but non linear swingarm action could solve every suspension set up with barely a linkage in site)
belt drive and gearbox bikes +1
currently investigating cheaper options.

Mountain bike trips to the moon. Low gravity bunny hops is where it's at.
Belt and gearbox drives.
Gearboxes, single sided swing arms with enclosed belt drives.
Hydro drop bars levers are on the way, which in the longer term will lead to single sided road bike frames and forks.
However I think the most interesting developments will most likely be taking place in the city/transport/utility/folding bike arena as the world's attentions start to focus more and more on cycling as everyday transport rather than a minority hobby.
material and energy prices are rising.
western governments are in a race-to-the-bottom to devalue their currency.
disposal/recycling costs will increase.
= bike bits will cost more, and we'll have less money to buy them with.
we'll want stuff to last, because binning/recycling/replacing will cost us more than it used to.
but there's no profit in low value products with long usefull lives.
bike companies will turn their attention to other, richer countries.
the future? - supermarket BSO's.
Bikes have been taking ideas from cars: disc brakes, hydraulics, tubless tyres, suspension, gearboxes.
So next up is climate control and a stereo.
And an engine.
Slack and stiff 120mm rear, 130/140mm front bikes with through axles. Would be perfect for the UK.
I'm thinking electric bikes will be the norm in <10yrs.
Last night whilst out in the S'Downs I spotted a Farmer Type riding home, up a steepish hill, a bridleway no less, on a fat tyred leccie.. fully panniered up too. He seemed quite happy gliding along.
I'm just wondering where we're going to get all this leccie from, Nuclear Energy?
Garlic.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................bread?
