Do you think it looks chintzy? I'm about to buy a new bike and the option is there but Im wondering if I should remain conservative, black throughout.

I would exercise restraint, maybe just headset and hubs.

Bike is orange btw.

You’ll likely never match colours from different manufacturers.

Unless they are black, or the bike is a hope hb160, and everything is colour matched...

I thought about blue rims for my green bike. Went with black. Got a black saddle with an asymetrically placed square of green on it however. If that helps!

Blue headset and hubs would look good IMO.

Whatever you decide I’d advise caution against Hope components. As much as I love hope, the colour fades so you need to do it all at the same time so that they fade together. I can’t really fit new hope purple components any more without making that colour fade enormously obvious.

Yeah, I had thought blue h/set and hubs. Also thinking about purple.

Good point re fading, hadn't thought of that...

If the frame is monochrome you can get away with coloured components. On a brightly coloured frame I'd keep it simple, black.

I'm one for moderation in ano colours.
Unless it's purple.
Or the chap at Cambusbarron with spokes in rainbow patterns. 😎

I9 rainbow spokes are frickin awesome, but should only be used on a bike with NO other colour.

+1

hubs and headset, and maybe one or two other spots but I don't think seatclamps work personally.

I've always thought that Hope gunmetal would look great with an Orange frame.

Understated but not just black.

Less is definitely more imho.

I colour matched my fender, but everything else is black.

I think it makes the frame colour pop more.

You need restraint, but not too much restraint.

Because colour is dangerous and wrong?

The danger of a terrible looking bike is very real.

This is my approach as well… although Chris King coloured components still always catch my eye…

Anodised stuff only fades if you use Muc-off and the like, a lot of bike cleaners are very harsh.  I’ve got ano stuff from the late 80’s/early 90’s which is still fine.

Coloured components are the last word in poor taste.

"Coloured components are the last word in poor taste.”

Why? Because you say so?

I'm quite partial to adding a bit of colour to my bikes, but it is usually a case of less is more but if the bike is orange, I'd be tempted to keep it black or gunmetal.

“<span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: #eeeeee;">Because I have eyes”</span>

Ones that have never witnessed colour, must be depressing seeing things in greyscale.

I pretty much have black hope on all my bikes to keep it simple.

Only exceptions are my black raw carbon HT has a red hope seat clamp and some red stem spacers. It did have a red headset but I didnt like it and then swapped it out for an angleset which only came in black anyway.

And the second are the orange reservoir caps on my green solaris to match the orange cotic badge and the seat tube sticker. I got them cheap 2nd hand to try but hate them. I just don't do colour. Other people make it work, I cannot. So from now on I will stick with black.

With caution.

Different mfrs ano will never quite match as above, and it will all fade.

If done all at once on a new bike maybe, but if you plan to carry Parts forward then maybe not.

There’s a large dollop of taste involved, but also much depends on if it will make you happier I think. Your bikes should please you, not others.

I think the red on the green Niner looks good. It's all subjective I suppose.

No one seems to be feeling my purple. (as it were)

A little bit of blue on my stomach bile coloured Transition.

The colour is that vile that it wouldn't matter what coloured components you threw on it

Lots of random colours on my bikes, but my Cotic Rocket is green with orange ano bits - I'm quite happy with it, despite it being from several different manufacturers! If you don't like it, don't look at it! 😉
