Is there an agreed term for those wishing to leave front mechs and going to a single ring up-front?

Can't think of anything at the mo:)

You have all the ratios you need to test it- just figure out which gears you'd lose, and go for a ride without using them.

You hear sometimes from people who jumped into 1x without really understanding what gears they'd have and then discover they needed the low gears, and frankly, they're mostly divs. Sure, you can get caught out by a ride that's outwith your norms (there was a kinlochleven enduro that became the Bonfire of the 1x10s, the long grinding climb broke so many people that thought 1x10 was perfect for them but actually just hadn't yet found a ride they couldn't do) but if it happens in your normal rides- you're a div.

Divs...

Maybe the collective term is a 'singular' lol!

Or an 'exasperation' of riders, running out of gears.

Sheep.

I'll be honest I went 1x9 because, I still don't know even with a 30t front it was stupid. Mates said "you get used to it" and you do to a certain degree - I missed the top end more than anything.

1x 10 with a bigger cassette and a 32t was a lot better but it's still not perfect.

Finally 1x11 with a 32t and 11/42 on the rear is even better - but there's getting away with it - there's still no silly low first for those "love a duck that's steep" moments.

I remarked to a mate at the weekend that I still don't know why I did it other than 'fashion' and he said "ah but you wouldn't go back to..." and made the sound of a chain sliding against a front mech cage you might get if you've not chosen the right mix of front and rear, "nah I guess not" and the rode off with a ****ed up chainline and slightly draggier louder front ring that seems to wear out every 3-5 months and throws the chain into the piantwork when it does.

ImHo there's pros and cons to 1x and 2x (even 3x) but being how many people threw themselves at 1x almost immediately im guessing it was a fashion thing.

and slx 1x is cheaper than an slx 2x now though... and 1x has been out since 2012, so hardly a trend... and, gullible?... come on, it works really well for so many people, which is why it's as cheap as it is...

I was 1x5 a decade before that

some compromises only inherit the positives of the compromise it seems. 1x, 650b, tubeless...

I'll go with either losers or cyclists, depending on their attitude towards the fact that there is not only 1 right way.

Is there a term for people who care about other peoples preferences for kit?

I can think of a few but none are polite.

Why would you associate people with no front mech as being rich. That's kinda odd?!?

Exactly.

Who cares if you're riding with or without a front mech?

It's all good surely? 😀

Went 2x9 a few years ago and just swap the chain when needed, I really am more of a spinner up climbs so it's better for me and I buy the cheaper, harder wearing parts due to not caring about weight so they last ages

Enlightened. Obviously that is only for me and the riding I do. If I lived in other areas or rode differently I would have to chose Compromised. But I don't, so enlightened I am.

Really can't think of a ride, either in the South Downs where I live or in Wales, Shropshire, the Purbecks or Northern Italy where I've ridden in the last few years that I've regretted 'only' having 30-11/42. Not when racing Southern Wnduro, or when on a 6 hour ride around Llangollen area, or on a 50 mile New Forest bash with guys on cx bikes. I'm not that fit either. Mind you I still remember running 36-12/28 back in the '90s.
What I don't tend to do is sneer at the component choices of other riders, that's a bit of a dick move...

ditto

but the sturmey archer thing was so bad it was more like 1x2.5 or 1x2, since one of the gears would always slip out, and your knees would smack the handlebars. not the bit with the silly foam rubber padding either.

Wowser!

Some very polarised views.

I run 3*8, which seems to work great, regardless of the chain angle. But it seems to be harder to find 8 speed octalink chain sets.

Nah, it's just that this has been done to death on here so folk are taking the piss (well, I know I was - I've got 1x, 2x and 3x bikes in my quiver),

In hindsight, i should have grabbed 1x10 bargain bits as i came across them last year, given how the value of the pound has tumbled since that crazy vote of my lifetime.

Financially, I'm feeling locked into 8-speed on the Wazoo now. There was that bargain XT shifter pair for £40 recently, but who knows how long it would take to get all the other bits without breaking the bank.
