Get a cheap Vanilla R from somewhere and get it tuned to suit by TF.

Lots of people rave about the CCDB but if I had my time again, I'd probably spec a vanilla with piggy back and a custom tune.

(Edit). 1 minute. I'm not copying, I promise. I just typed slow.

I want a CCDB, purely because it appeals to my geeky side (which covers about 99% of my surface area :s )

Trouble is I dont own a full sus!

Rocco WC on my DH bike is very good.

Old style vanilla RC on my five is also good.

Never got on well with DHx's, not sure what the new RC4 is like

would the shock from a big hit fit a bottlerocket? be surprising if it was exactly the same size, given a shock from an '06 transition preston won't fit an '07 transition preston. might fit though

200 mm eye to eye but is the stroke the same?

I recently bought a van r from tftuned £189. They said next years basic shock would be a lot dearer...

Is it just me that's amazed that you need to ask on here, or are you just craving attention?

I just changed from a DHX5 to an RC4 both TFtuned.
The RC4 is a fair bit better. It seems to soak up the bumps better and pop of lips better also. On the big sstuff also it doesn't blow through its travel as easily either.

The DHX5 was good though once it was tuned. If your gonna get a DHX though just get the DH3 and have it push'd it works out cheaper than DHX5 and once push'd tit will perform basically the same.

Not ridden a double barrel but people rave about them, although many seem to have issue setting them up. I have ridden a BOS stoy and they are really nice. However the BOS and CCDB are £600+ which is steep.

I bought two cheap secondhand shocks for my new Nicolai. Float R and DHX4, I'm trying both and fiddling with the settings working out what I think will work best... then going shopping for either a new shock or a custom tune. Fettling is fun.

I didn't realise that soliciting other peoples opinion on what works best was against the rules on here.

Jedi won't have ridden everything so and I'm guessing here, wanted to get some users opinion on other shocks before parting with his cash.

Just bought a CCDB for my Nicolai.......

They get nothing but rave reviews!

Set up is the only downside.

Let the fun begin!

I Had a pushed DHX coil and then went to a CCDB and there was a big difference. The CCDB feels like it is making the rear wheel stick to the floor, you can also play with the LSC to get the perfect pedalling ability.
If you have any problems with a CCDB speak to Malcolm at cane creek,he sent me a spring and mounting kit FOC,and advised me on some setup.

I have heard good things about the Rockshox Vivid but havent used one yet.

Problem with second hand Fox shox is that it's very possible you won't get one with the correct compression tune, which can make it terrible... Sending it off for a custom tune will fix that though.

I've had DHX5 which I pushed, and it became very nice. Next bike I bought a pushed Van R and it was just as nice. For the current bike I was contemplating between an Elka and a CCDB. I'm not very good at tuning suspension which made me select the Elka (I'm not sure I'd get the slow / fast rebound set up correctly).

The Elka is stunning really. It just eats everything up without complaining. Easy to set up and blows everything I had till now out of the water.

Choosing between the Elka and the CCDB there is another consideration then the ease of set up. The Elka supposedly likes to ride higher up in it's travel and has better pop of lips. Hard to say personally as I did not try the CCDB...

Actually I currently have an Uzzi VP set with 7" of travel at the rear. I use it mainly for trail riding, and I've climbed numerous technical difficult places that I never managed with my previous bikes (Chumba XCL with a pushed RP23, Intense Tracer VP with a pushed Van R). This just has bucketloads of traction.

I'd thought of that Kamina... A custom tune was always in the plan, I paid little enough for them that there is money in the pot for custom tuning before I hit retail price for either 8)
I though it good to get a base reference on a shock before deciding what way to tune or what new shock to buy. But so far I've only had the air shock running and it's ace so I've not even tried the coil other than a short blast. I can get my money back by flogging them so nothing lost.

as a slight hi-jack, can an original ('99-06?) van R be custom/tuned pushed?
It's the only coils shock that I could get to fir my 06 Reign frame
