Is there a more unpleasant surface to ride down at speed than infrequently maintained cobbles?

I take it you've not ridden Paris - Roubaix then?
As much speed as you can carry and a loose grip on the bars and a gear higher then you'd prefer to ride.

No, never rode P-R 😛

I'd cracked the carrying of speed, loose grip, high gear (and keeping the cranks turning to reduce the chances of the chain coming off) but it's still not massively pleasant, especially when it goes on for ¾ mile.

Worse, on the grounds that I don't think P-R has to contend with wheel-swallowing holes, and horses/land rovers coming the other way.

Oh, there were holes at P-R, maybe not Land Rovers but camper vans, Mercs and a team car recc-ing for the Sunday playing Road to Hell over the PA 😈
And there were 30Km of cobbles...
