Although there's a fair amount of standing in xc racing, I'd still recommend you stretch the budget to a seatpost and saddle 🙂

nice bike though, you really don't need to spend loads to get a light xc race bike. If you can self build wheels, for 150ish you can get 1500g easily which would save a good chunk of weight!

Where did you get the fork for that price?

tweaks, it was reduced to £210 as the steerer was already cut. it was on there site for a few months. I e-mailed a cheeky bid and they said yes (happy days)!

deore brakes are good enough (plus very cheap)

x7 rear mech (cheap to replace & hardly any difference in weight & function)

0x grip shift are very light and very reliable plus only £50

around 20lb,

Yeah. Right. 😉
That's not been anywhere NEAR a set of scales. I'll bet it's 24-ish. I stuck a mates carbon Whippet on my scales. He thought it was 22lb.
Not even close! It was 25ish if I recall correctly 🙂

I love it how 'cobbled together' means more 'mismatching' than cheap necessarily. I'll agree its cheap in the grand scheme of things, but my current parts bin is a factory old stock steel Saracen (1990's) frame which I had to source my own Saracen decals for, some Acera combined brake/gear shifters, no name V-brakes, an old Isis crankset with worn rings....

Looks ace. But run as 1x9 to save more weight. Got plans to race something on it?

Well I still like it.
24lbs still sounds good.

My old Trek SLR frame,
Old square internal type deore chainset,
Exotic alu rigid fork,
LX shifters & mechs,
Thomson post,
Raceface Evolve bar & stem,
Cheap DT-Swiss hubs on 317rims

prob just under 27lb .... Still peddles as if its much lighter.
i will be doing Wentwood enduro on it again this year.
Fully-rigid does it for me.
