Just venturing (possibly temporarily) into the world of 1x11 following the destruction of my last 3x9 setup a week ago. No problems - except...
...is it usual/common to have to adjust the clutch tension before use? I haven't put the mech (XT) on the bike yet but, coming from a long time riding non-clutch mechs, it feels unbelievably stiff when I try and move the cage by hand. Is that normal?
I'll be putting it on anyway, suck it and see, just curious.
Is the clutch on or off?
Err.....sort of the point of the clutch tbh.
Yeah, well i did on every clutch mech i fitted when i worked as a shop mech,
I did too....to turn them up. 😀
If the clutch is on then it should be hard to push the mech forward. If you need to take Out/put in the rear wheel you need to disengage the clutch.
If it’s a new mech you shouldn’t have to adjust it..
I thought the same until I put it on and tried it. It's fine.
Yes I have changed every one I've put on.
If the clutch is too tight (it usually is) shifting at the top of the cassette suffers.
Assuming the rest of your set up is right! You can test by shifting through all the gears with the clutch off and then on. Sometimes the difference is pretty drastic and it won't shift right at all with the clutch on. If you notice shifting is overly difficult with the clutch on, slacken it off about an 1/8 of a turn and try again until it feels sweet. Obviously you should be able to feel a bit more resistance pushing the cage by hand with the clutch on than when it's off!
The clutches are usually adjustable. Take the plate off covering the clutch, and try and slack off the bit tightening the wrap-around that strangles the mech's movement.
And try not to let it all fall apart as it's a tadge fiddly getting it back together again.
Thanks for the (mostly) helpful responses. I was just interested, having no frame of reference. I installed the mech earlier today with the clutch off and, once adjusted, put the clutch on. It's still shifting through the gears, perhaps not quite as well. I'll give it a few rides, see how it goes. If necessary, adjustment seems easy enough.
