OK they don't, but they should.
The clocks went back 8 weeks before the winter solstice. We're now eight weeks after the winter solstice. But the clocks won't go forward for another 5 WEEKS! We've now got the same amount of daylight that we had in October and if we put our clocks forward now we'd be able to make use of those lengthening evenings for all sorts of outdoor pursuits.
Why is Summer Time asymmetrical? Is there a reason I can't see?
This isn't an arguments for or against summer/winter time per se. But if we're going to have it why can't it be more logical?
Farmers or something like that. They haven't got those new fangled light bulbs out on the farms yet and the gas lamps don't last so long.
yawn. get over it
I have also wondered about this. There have been attempts to change it:
http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2007-08/1256
and it's been discussed in several places, including here:
http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/why-isnt-daylight-saving-symmetrical-around-the-shortest-day
There's a suggestion on Quora that it's about saving home heating costs but I don't understand that.
It's not symmetrical take a look at the graph. The Morning daylight is 06:58 at both changes. Evenings are very different.
On the bike forum...?
Yes on the bike forum. I could use the extra hour in the evening for cycling.
@abductee - from your graph, the day before the clocks changed : dawn was at 7:56 and dusk was at 17:45. If we change the clocks next weekend dawn will be at 7:55 and dusk at 17:45. So we're being robbed of 4 weeks of lighter evenings.
@mikesmith - get over what? I'm offering you an extra month of lighter evenings - it seems desirable no?
Wasn't it the old and Scottish that objected ?

Lights are cheap and good, what about working mornings for people?
If we were looking for symmetry Shirley we'd have 6 month equal parts GMT and BST and sod that - it's bad enough it's 5 months long.
Wasn't it the old and Scottish that objected ?
I think we Scots object to abolishing "winter time" completely. That's not what I'm talking about though.
If we're happy with sunrise time in October, why wouldn't we be happy the same time it in March.Lights are cheap and good, what about working mornings for people?
i work flexi time.
I'm all for scrapping winter time completely and adopting CET
If you want lighter evenings just get up and start earlier.
It was just a guess, I did hear Jeremy Vine have a show about it sometime ago now and I'm pretty sure his conclusion was the blame lies with the Scottish, and the Old.
I'd be in favour of abolishing the nonsense and moving to CET.
Post Brexit we have no chance of moving to CET - that would be non-British....
Knowing the pro-Brexit lobby groups we will probably move to an entirely new and even further removed time system from our neighbours!
(I am all for CET myself)
