My worn daily commuting helmet absolutely stinks, a few of the pads aren't removable.

I've tried fairy liquid, a bar of Dove and shampoo, it's fine for a day but then back to smelling of wet dog/mouldy digestive biscuits.

What does everyone else clean their helmets with fnarr fnarr.......

Try a solution of bicarbonate of soda. It gets the smell of baby sick out of a carpet so could do wonders for your rancid head gear

Muc off do a helmet foam. Really does the trick on a smelly helmet.

After washing leave to dry in direct sunlight; the UV rays can help kill the bacteria that cause the smells.

+1 for sunlight

My helmet now smells delightful. Wanna sniff?

Muc-off helmet cleaner is good stuff, spray the foam on, work it in a bit then wipe off any excess or just leave it to dry.

Obvs removable pads go in the washing machine.

As with all sweaty, smelly items in our house we call in the Halo.
Use it for all bike clothing weekly, and never have smelly stuff.
Just done my helmet this week as it was getting funky, and it is now odour free. Even works on HR straps.

To stop it developing in the first place mine gets a slosh in the bath after every ride. Rinses out the sweat, leave to drip dry overnight.

Pretty sure leaving it in direct sunlight is bad advice and can reduce effectiveness in a crash.

Fail to see how this differs from wearing it for a five hour ride on a sunny day.

As with all sweaty, smelly items in our house we call in the Halo.

Used Halo products for quite while, but unfortunately it started to irritate my skin, so switched to Dettol Anti-bacterial Laundry Cleanser. Works wonders with whiffy running & cycling gear,

wear a cap beneath it and clean that separately, much easier
