Disconnect hose, feed regular kitchen string through. Tie knot. Pull back. say eeeugh! at amount of foul slimy crud on string. Rinse. Warming the whole lot in hot water makes disconnecting easier on the tight Camelbak ones.

A blast from the steam pipe on your coffee machine helps kill the germs. If you possess such a thing.

The camelbak cleaner is worth getting as you can work it back and forth. Whereas the string only goes in one direction. As Midlifecrashes says, get ready to say eeeugh!

Bit of old gear cable and an off cut of kitchen cloth

If you want bidirectional string just use a longer bit with a knot in the middle!

Going for a broken string from the GF's harp with a bit of rag tied on, fishing line would probably do if I had some of that.
