Anyone know if any old style xc races are run these days? Cheap entry, grass roots, local club type stuff, blasting round a field for an hour until it hurts. ...jumpers for goalposts.... like what we did back in the early 90s?
If so where do I find something the midlands?
not the midlands

no idea of who, what, how etc, came across this, it is worcester so can't be that hilly or mountainous
Just found this: http://fnssmtb.wordpress.com/looks interesting.
Yeah I did one last year and will aim to do as much of the series as possible this year, a friend of mine does them. Great atmosphere, small-scale races, 45min + 1 lap format, so really fun fast racing. The course I did was at Fermyn Woods, brilliant flat out race course. Some of them however aren't as good apparently, just riding around the edge of a golf course for an hour. Still probably the friendliest series I've taken part in, would heartily recommend it.
Cascade Creampuff. A bit epic and in Oregon, but it embraces the epic races of the '80s
Forget racing around a field.

There are rumours of a Friday night XC summer series in North Manchester this year.
Dorset Rough Riders have put on a brilliant mini enduro (2 hours + a lap) with kids races in Wareham Forest in May for the last 2 years - hopefully they'll be doing that again.

The alternative is to set it up yourself ๐
you'd be amazed how much goes into a 'jumpers for goal posts' xc race ๐
I know exactly how much effort is involved. As do big_n_daft and Mr Sparkle.
It can still be done.
As do i Harry, I too am involved with Brownbacks
