Looking for a set of circlip pliers for the internal clip.
Have seen these chaepies on Amazon but not sure if they're the right ones for the job and weather I need to spend a bit more.
Plus, is a normal 24mm socket bit up to the job as I'm sure I've read that they can round the top cap?
Have a chat with 18bikes about the socket.
You'll probably need internal and external circlip pliers. Nothing too fancy, but the holes in the clips can be a pain with stumpy ended pliers. I got away with a bog standard b & q 24mm socket but can see the sense in grinding it flat.
Just did this very thing a couple of days ago. Both purchased from Halfords. Check your local stock first.
If you get a normal socket upou have to file the chamfer off so that the engaging sides are right to the end of the socket as the nut is very shallow.
Think I managed to get quite a thick circlip pliers onto the circlip of the turnkey damper of my rockshox tora SL forks.
I just use the open end of a spanner or 24mm socket and a cheap set of circlip pliers from screwfix
Halfords pro 24mm socket works for me, just be a bit careful cos it's not too rounded but it's not a flat edge. Don't need to grind the edge off just take a bit of care.
Screw fix circlip pliers - I've got the ones with the interchangeable heads for flat, 45 or 90 degrees internal or external. Does all jobs that way.
So a set of these and of one of these?
Oh and I'll give 18 a buzz in the morning.
As wwaswas eluded to, 18 have come up trumps, they sell machined sockets, which although slightly more expensive, it should make the job slightly easier.
I've also ordered a set of the pliers I linked in my op as Halfords are out of stock, hopefully they'll be up to the job?
The new Pikes have a pretty low "nut" on the 24mm crown so if your socket is heavily chamfered away, it ends up with very little engagement. Mine work fine but I can see that some won't.
Another option is an open spanner- Park make a 24mm cone spanner which would do the job. Ideal if you have Lyrik or Boxxer as you can get the top cap off without undoing the fiddly dials
beware of budget circlip pliers, i got a cheap set - £15 ish for the 4 and managed to snap the points off 2 of the pairs of pliers servicing a set of sektor forks.
Since then i have got a set of 4 wiha circlip pliers that seem much better made and have been trouble free.
The cost a bit more but when you consider the price per pair of pliers seem reasonable link
I believe I got my circlip pliers from Maplins. They are a bit budget with a swappable internal and external head that just seems loose, but has worked okay so far.
I got these set of 4 http://www.screwfix.com/p/circlip-pliers-set-4-piece/43041
And used 24mm socket from socket set
