Snowing on the Stelvio at the moment, helicopters grounded so TV coverage is going to be patchy.

Massive descent off the Stelvio too, probably worse than the climb up it in this weather. Deep snow up the top.

Descent down the Stelvio is going to paced by a motorbike apparently.

Shame the coverage on Eurosport missed the Gavia.

It was on Eurosport online but no commentary. Should be able to view it on demand later too.

Speaking of descending, awful to see Phinney come a cropper at the US nationals. Hopefully they'll all get down safely today.

Just heard that, I wonder how it will work as the race is on. Time gaps somehow preserved?

Edit: doesn't look like there's any pacing going on

Cataldo pushing on! No sign of him being paced down.

Truly truly epic (a word I do not use lightly) racing. The Giro is something else, and far from over!

Nothing neutralised about this. Classic stuff. Quintana is not going to like this.

I'm guessing lot of locked wheels and falls

Indeed. I find my mtb near impossible to control. (this may actually be true but it a reflection of me rather than the discs ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Be great if Cataldo holds this. Big ask but he's not hanging around at the moment.

"If it was tennis we'd just pull the covers and have a cup of coffee" little dig from Sean! ๐Ÿ˜†

I'm glad your MTB is used with 23 or 25 slick tyres on wet and snowy roads exclusively ๐Ÿ™„

Cracking quote from Sean Kelly: if this were tennis we'd just pull the plastic over and go for coffee! ๐Ÿ™‚

Not seen any time gaps for a while now. Be good if he could hold on. Probably need a good few minutes at the base of the climb though.

45ish seconds to the chasing group. Not sure how far back to the pack though

Yes, because all disk brakes are identical with absolutely no modulation what so ever ๐Ÿ™„
Carbon rims and rim brakes are far more grabby in general than disks.

Blimey some biggish gaps made on the descent if the stated time gaps are to be believed.

Can you chaps not go find a road disc thread and go argue there?

Great stage so far.

Blimey want a summit in the snow. Most of team Columbia looked absolutely frozen. It's chaos - riders and team cars all over the place. What an epic days riding.

Great stage so far.

It'd be better if they were on discs ๐Ÿ™‚

Epic stuff though. Reminds me of the recent meme of 'pretends he's hurt/pretends he's OK'.

Can't see Cataldo holding on to this, only 1'20 at the base of the climb and the GC boys are pushing on.

As the commentators have said - his breakaway is caught in the crossfire of the Quintana vs Uran chase - and he's likely to get caught.

Brilliant stage so far ( as well as bonkers ). Looks like PR, NQ and RH might get reeled in as I'd have thought they'd be increasing the gap at this stage. They've all worked hard last week. Waiting to see what Possovivo and Aru can do today.

Edit: Scratch that, that's 20 secs they've put in over the last 2 km!

3 minutes, someone's got to go!

Surprised to see Rolland go, he's looked comfortable so far.

Brilliant shot of Rolland " giving up " with a massive exhale as he went round the corner.

I always like to see Rolland dropped. Just always struck me as having no class.

Question now is how much he can put into the others ahead of the final time trial
