Do you mean chrome plating? If so forget it, it is too brittle and flakes far too easily. Yes I have tried it and it was not practical. I then tried nickling and although it did not flake it wore through with just a sideways glance. I then tried an enameling process and that came out messy, probably due to al the fannying around with the preceeding processes, so I had it stripped again and had it powder coated a not too shiney silver colour.

You can have it nickle plated which is tougher but does chip and can't be touched up.

You could get it copper plated (one of the stages in Chrome plating) and either leave it to weather or lacquer over. Not cheap and can mess up the threads in BB / bottle cage / seatpost fit.

Powder coating is cheap, tough, easy to touch up and enviromentally friendly compared to the other options. Have a look in the yellow pages or if you are near B'ham Bournes in Digbeth or Sweeny and Sherlock near the footy stadium.

you have chosen the wrong chrome plating bunch by the sounds of it! Ive had alloy araya rims chrome played around 1993 and the chrome was perfect. the only imperfections were the marks on the rim from when they were made. the braking surface lasted well too. if you look in the back pages of motorcyclenews or the other motorbike magazines you`ll find the names of a few that can chrome. then do a search for each of them and see what you can find about the quality of their services on the net.one gets rave reviews but i canna mind the name of them.

Was also going to say you can get chrome paint Its somewhere in the region of around £150 a litre though so might not be an option
