Ive just bought an old but unused bike. One of the pr of wheels it came with have CK hubs. They are qr with a 135 rear. They are less than 10 miles old.
Ive not had CK before, so what do i need to know about looking after them?
Do i need special tools?
Thanks
Ian
You need special tools to remove bearings but IIRC you can pull the QR ones apart with two allen keys (one in each end of the axle) for cleaning/ free hub service.
If they are truly only 10 miles old they will need the bearing preload resetting at some point in the next 100 miles.
To do a full strip down you need the Chris King tools (or another way of supporting the bearings during removal)
You can remove the axle and freehb, remove the bearing seals and clean and lube with just normal tools
Hub instruction manuals are here

I had a pair, allen key and I would just remove the ends, flush it out with WD40 once a winter and do the bearings the same. You can buy some CK grease and regrease it. Thats all I did, but once it wore out and had play so I had to send it off to get some new internals.
Youtube will show you all you need. If that simple flush, clean and grease fails to sort any issues, just send them off and not waste money on expensive tools you may only need once in a few years.
They are not as robust as everyone says, they are not well sealed against muddy British riding and do get mucky. Sure, if you just ride in the dry, avoid pudles and dont rag your bike round Welsh hills - they probably will last forever. But mine did need some care and attention.
I would not buy them again, I would use DT Swiss hubs and just replace the bearings whenever needed as its fast and cheap.
They werwnt the reason i bougjt the bike...but we do live in Snowdonia and i ride all year.
I will check out the preload and service instructions.
Thanks
Ive been running a set on various bikes for the last 15 years, all I do is strip out with wd40 and relube with the chris king ring drive lube twice a year and honestly they still run as smooth as the day i got them. only need an occassional tighten up on the preload.
Awesome! They are on a Moots ti canti braked bike....so its a keeper!
