how possible/advisable is it to install it without the CK-specific press adapter?
Plank of wood, big hammer. Same as any other headset and I've not broken one yet.

I've done a few times and don't have the special adaptor. I used an old headset to make sure the press is pushing on the cup and not the bearings. No need for the special tool IMO.

No need for the special tool. I've used a plank of wood and a hammer, and a Park Tool press, the press did make a little more sense to be honest, but both achieved the same result.
No need for a special tool. It's easier to get the logos lined up where you want them if you use a press, if that kind of thing bothers you of couse.
ok thanks. so you want to use the press in such a way that it presses on the very outside bit, the raised ring - rather than the silver internal bit, yes?

Yes the cup, not the bearings. I've fitted mine fine. You need to use a headset press that uses flat plates to keep the cups aligned around the top edge.
my headset press has got 'stepped' things
like in this picture,

but if I am understanding you right by "flat plates", I need to use the stepped things the other way round to what they are in that pic?
i.e. so that the NON-stepped end presses against the headset cup?
or by "flat plates" do you mean the little washer type things that also come with the headset press (that i have never so far used - albeit only ever to install semi-integrated headset cups which don't contain the bearings)
i'm sure it'll be fine, i have installed a CK before using a botched together headset press - a length of threaded bar and some big washers from b&q, it was a bit shite as the cups started off wonky but straightened themselves out, but that was on a bike that i decided i didn't like and sold fairly soon after, so no idea how it lasted...
but if i can make it easier for myself by understanding how you've done it all the better.
No, that is precisely the kind of press you can't use bonj.
I fit all my headsets with some threaded bar, 4x flat plates with a hole drilled centrally and tthree nuts. If you take your time and are methodical, they all go in plumb straight.
You might be able to use your press if you can replace the stepped bits with some washers that are large enough to ONLY contact the outside top edge of the cup, like this:
It really ain't rocket science ...
Going to be putting my 2nd headset in at the weekend and will drag it altogether using the forks, spacers and SFN like I did the last one. Didnt seem to harm the bearings last time...
Mind you its not a CK.... I borrowed the shops tool for that one..
OP you can use washers made from compressed horse-poo if you like, as lomng as they are not pushing on the bearings themselves (I've used the stepped spacers the other way round without a problem in the past)
