I'm going at the weekend and taking the MTB, have GPS / maps etc - what's the riding like up at Black Down and Rowberrow and is that the best place to ride?

Cheers and thanks for any advice ๐Ÿ˜†

Never ridden in the blackdowns, but they're some 20 miles south. Rode rowberrow for the first time on the weekend.

That was our ride, we started the other side of the hill at Burrington, which wasn't a great idea. I'd start at the base of rowberrow near The swan Inn. Get up to the top and you'll see the woods on cheddar/shipham sde of the hill, lots of single track in there and you'll see plenty of people there to give you a guide around. Just get up onto the top by the trig point and wait 5 minutes, guarantee you'll see some cyclists to tag along with!

Blackdown is the area of moorland surrounding the trig point (called Beacons Batch). Roeberrow is the small forest plantation to the west of Blackdown. Pretty much all the bridleways are well worth riding.

We usually start our rides from the bottom of Burrington Coombe and then ride up the road then up onto Blackdown. That way you have a superb descent back to the car (from the trig point) via a number of different ways, the best of which aren't on any maps!

yep and there's a great piece of track from the top of burrington towards rowbarrow as well. If you're starting in Chedder, finish by coming down Jacobs Ladder (the right hand side of the gorge as you look up it), great views as you do a fun track down.
Enjoy!

Transapp - very interesting trail and yes uber rideable - what's the deal with the Cheddar Caves gate mid-way by the tower as from my map is's a bridleway all the way and yet when you look at the signeage it appears that it may be privately owned.

I think that the steps down to the gorge are privatly owned where as the trail is a bridalway. Ignore the steps and you're doing OK. I've certainly never had any problems with 'gert orf moi land' types.
Interstingly, they charge you to go UP the steps, but not come back down if you walk up the bridal way direction.
Glad to be of assistance
