[#1040233]

After the last two weeks of rain I'm getting fatter without training...

Scratching my head over a turbo trainer £260 ish or gym membership at work for £185???

Any tips?

I'm swayed but never used a turbo trainer (well one that worked)

Thanks for any 'nice' advice. 🙂

Gym membership. You won't use either for long, but the gym membership won't stub your toe when you go into the spare room.

Turbo trainers can be found much cheaper than £260, I've got something like this and it does the trick, and it was only about £70 quid when I got it:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/CycleOps_Classic_Mag_Trainer_without_Shifter/5360012878/

I bought that and a set of free weights to train with, and the only reason they're not set up is that I dont have the space at the moment, I did use them regularly when the weather was too bad to get outside (...waits for barrage of MTFU comments...), I surprised myself as I expected it to be a waste of money but its certainly had some use, it doesnt induce the same buzz as riding outside but at least it gets you out of the chair when its wet...

Turbos. I really like using them, and once bought you've always got them.
They're great for specific training, spinning the legs before race day, easing out injuries and they aid bike set up.
I've also got some loose weights that I do a few minutes with after a turbo session.

Free weights and a bench, if you do between 45 mins - an hour a day you will see massive improvements in a couple of months. Definately gives you a buzz, especially when you start to see the results.

I do a rotating 4 day split of Chest-Arms-Shoulders-Back/abs. Had probably 5 days off in the last 4 months, and along with the commute, kickboxing and squash it has got me into shape.

decent lights and some mates to go night riding with!!! 🙂

failing that appeal for some nightriding company on here and get out there in the rain and the poo! Will be much more likely to get used than either the gym or the turbo!

Sorry - not very helpful!

I'm with you shortcut. riding in the wet and dark can hone your skills ready for spring.

Thanks for ALL your advice guys!

I was able to get a working turbo trainer (club discount) and dug out my free weights with moths/cobwebs...

I did manage 2 commutes (ridden fast) when it was not horrendous in the last few days-what a buzz!

But today had to spin on the turbo trainer and did some weights-need core strength and lose some excess weight not needed for hills.
(I did but a 2nd hand turbo trainer 2yrs ago and it fell to bits-the price for spares was more than a magenetic TT but did buy a 2nd hand DVD of road video cheap and still unopened!)

Good idea about the split workout to keep metabolism high too and I'm planning a route to get some of the local club riders out, who hate this weather more than me!

😀

Fitting some winter gear on the hack bike now.

Again-Thanks for the tips.

I've just cancelled my gym membership and will be buying a turbo next week. Added to the Swiss ball and dumbells in my garage, and I'm sorted for training. Much better as I don't have to listen to crap dance music, wait for people to finish using kit or have random strangers disturbing me.

Totally agree and having own music is even better.

Stubbed toes hurt... 😆
