Over the last couple of days I've been reconsidering the idea of assembling a 2 speed kickdown type road bike using a SA-S2 Hub, simply as a SS bike combined with my fitness just won't cut it for my work commute, this would be my Next - Next winter project and I'd probably scavenge some bits from my current road bike, buy a few others and of course I'll need a frame.
My first thought was a Pompino But then I thought, it doesn't have to have V or Canti brakesm, I could go for a road caliper/coaster at the back, which broadens the frame options a little bit.
So far I've Spotted a couple of candidates on ebay and other websites, available in steel and Aluminium all made in the far east, normally 120 spaced track ends, with a fork and headset included, drilled for road calipers, they all seem like they'll do what I need and they're alot cheaper than the various branded far east manufactured offerings about at the minute...
So has anybody got any experience with these sort of cheap frames at all? -used them for SS or Fixie build on a track of for road use? They're half the price but are they half as good?
I'd just but a tatty old steel road bike off ebay, or from the tip etc, that way you've got all your parts and you can substitute all the bits you don't need later?
I did consider a bit of Skip/Gumtree/freecycle diving to find an old frame but quite honestly I want something with a 1-1/8" Ahead Steerer and I'm 90% likely to find a 1" Quill stem jobbie, I'm looking to do the build using something a little bit more "current"...
