My mate is looking for a new fork for his old hardtail. It doesn't need loads of travel but it needs to be pretty light and able to take a V brake. Any suggestions?

The bike is a Claude Butler that is nearly 20 years old and he's currently got an old rockshox judy on it (i think).

have you considered a 100mm carbon rigid? Can be had cheaply these days

Some second-hand rebas or marzocchi marathon sl's would be my choice.

2nd hand set of Reba off the classifieds would be my choice, decent weight and will be adjustable between 85/100/115mm travel (older version). So he should find a setting they'll work @ with his bike.

For a lighter fork, maybe a set of 'old' (flexy) SID's if you can find some or if he has the cash a new set of SID's?. (same travel on the newer version as the Reba's too)

Threaded steerer? 1"? Might be, in which case might be a struggle?

Definitely, and I personally wouldn't bother spending any decent money on a 20 year old Claude Butler.

If he does want to go down that route, old SIDs fo sho, often appear on eBay for <£50.
