Considering something for my mum to pootle about town.

Halfords have these for £750. Any reason not to? This is a long term idea so not shopping just yet.

As mentioned on the G-tech thread, big discount on refurbished ones from their eBay store. (But they may well be shit)

That Halfords one looks like it probably weighs 7 million tons which could be a disadvantage if your mum ever has to lift it for any reason!

Funny.

My mom bought a similar bike - a bit more expensive - 2 years ago (not from Halfords, via e-bay).

Was first impressed with the bike.
But: to keep it going you need a full time bike mechanic... 😈

Yes. Still going. But now tend to the statement, sadly:

may well be shit

I'am not at all in e-bike stuff.
Love low cost mountain bikes so.

Fair point, but it's 1.5 miles to town and there are no steps or bike barriers to negotiate anywhere that I can think of.

Also the G-Tech has no rack or guards and by the look of it doesn't have such an easy rider Edwardian lady type riding position.

22kg that Halfords one. For a dutch bike style bike with power that is ok I think. IMO that style bike and the electric is the perfect combination. But not sure about that one. You have to have a different mindset to weight with both this style of bike and e bikes in general. My wife has one and getting it in the porch is an issue for her. My mum has one and putting it on a towbar rack is never going to happen for her. In both cases the compromise of style of ride, comfort and the E assist means the compromise is worth it as the alternative would be no riding.

As TJ says above a resonable quality motor and battery pack are spendy so £750 does not leave a lot for the bike it's strapped to. In that case the motor is not one I've heard of - it could be that that was where some of the compromises has been made. It looks ok for the cash, it just depends if that much cash is the limit of what you can justify spending.

Not likely to be torque sensing at that price then?

Probably not. Also the noise - they vary.

It's a changing market however - reliable and functional variants at reasonable money are getting more possible.

You'd be surprised, the Carrera's at halfords with the Suntour hub system are torque sensing, they have an eccentric crank so the more you pedal the more the eccentric bit get's rotated. It's not a wheatstone bridge of strain gauges, but it's torque sensing.
