Hi

Been trying to save cash for a transmission upgrade this year. Normally I go with XT with XTR chains, but this year got an Alivio cassette for £15 saving £30 and an XT chain saving £5. I'm happy with the savings and performance wise I've not noticed anything worse with the exception that the Alivio cassette isn't as rigid as the XT.

The question is has anyone downgraded like this before? Did the kit last as long, did you notice the weight difference (120g+ Alivio cassette) and are you now buying cheaper bits?

cheers and enjoy the bank holiday!

Not using cheap cassettes here because they ruin my alloy freehub. After only three rides with a Deore cassette the freehub was scarred.

XT cassette for me (six sprockets on an alloy spider) solves that and means I don't have to replace the freehub body as well as a worn cassette!

Downgrade you say? Does not compute...

I get my 10spd XT cassettes for £43 each plus £5 postage from bike-discount.de.

Get a few in one go (and tyres too) to get the most out of the postage paid.

tomhoward, it was painful, but the wallet doesn't compute to expense anymore 😥
