I've got a '16 Charge Plug with Claris stuff, most of which is near the end of its life. It's my commuter, pretty flat round here, and I value simplicity, so is there any reason I can't replace the chainset with a cheapish 1x MTB one? Providing I can find a suitable sized ring?

I've got a similar aged one, it'll work fine. It's a 68mm shell so will need 3 spacers for an MTB crank instead of 1 for the road crank, if you're running a hollow tech bottom bracket. I've got an XT BB and SLX cranks on mine at the moment.
Aces, thanks very much! What size ring did you use(and where from?)? Just wondering what there's room for at the stays with it in a decent chainline.
No worries. Just the outer ring of a triple set of chainrings in the middle position of a triple chainset. It's a 42t and there's plenty of room.
