[Closed] changing all 3 chainrings?
looks like you have to remove the crank arm to do this as ive just found out, aint got a big enough allen key either, do you have to remove the arm or is there another way?
Presuming they're not HTII, you'll need a crank extractor too, unless you're lucky enough to have self extractor bolts.
Most chainsets you can change the big and middle without taking the crank off. Just undo the bolts, rotate the ring to give you clearance over the crank arm, and pull off.
as i said im changing all 3, its a raceface 4 bolt crank arm, ive taken big ring off and cant seem to get the middle one over the arm and definatly not the small ring, looks like ill need to take the arm off but ive never done that before so whats do i need to do
Well, you'll need an allen key to fit the bolt, a crank extractor to wind into the threads of the crank arm, and a big adjustable spanner to wind the extractor against the BB axle.

yeah i just watched a video, ill need an extractor, dam, get these new chainrings and cant even put em on ๐
what chainset is it, plenty dont need extractors (HT2) and all the RF ones I ever had, have self extracting bolts.
its Raceface Atlas, fair new tbh i just need to get this done lol its so annoying me
like said above mostly from 07 upwards there self extracting. does it say xtype on the cap?.
yeh it says x type
why, does x-type need a extractor?
My new raceface needs an extractor to remove.
ill have to get one tomorrow, is it worth trying to do it your self then?
Raceface x-type are self extracting.
Just undo the inner 8mm bolt and it will push against the 10mm outer and extract the crank
i dont have an allenkey for the 8mm m8 but is that all you do?
Not all recent RF are self extracting. I had to get a park tools extractor for one RF 2008 deus chainset. An ordinary generic extractor wouldn't work because it needed a wide central pusher.
And yes - I did try one of the RF extractor caps that should screw in the the threads.
ill take it to local bike shop and have a word tomz or something
Thats all I have ever had to do with my old x-type cranks.
If the top cap says X-Type and it shows opposing arrows for tightening the 8 and 10mm bolts I'm pretty sure thats all you'll have to do.
Normally takes a fair amount of force to get it going (I used to use an extension bar) but after that they come off easy
well it definatly says x type with the arrows on, ive never taken them off before, id prefer to double check with bike shop and see what they gota say, ill end up braking it if i dont fully know what im doing lol
