Can I swap my 42 32 24 chain set which runs on a ten speed for a 48 38 24

depends if the rear mech will cope with the extra chain length required as you now have 8 more teeth in your "longest"* gear

* BIG front BIG rear

I suspect the range between big big and little little may be a struggle for any mech and you will certainly need a long cage

what rear mech and what will it cope with ?

still need to know which one and length- three versions listed here and all XT and all say only 18 T difference at front though they cope with different size teeth difference overall

IMHO you could probably get it to be acceptable but not ideal at changes - ie some issues at big big and little little and "sacrifice" which ones you dont want- I assume little little but you may get issues such as chain drop and/or mech to hit stuff on drive train if not careful
