[Closed] Chainset disaster in Les Gets

[#10758443]

I have had a week in Les Gets on my PP Shan. Yesterday as i got off the lift home i noticed that the R pedal had totally come loose in the RH crank. The aluminium thread in the 10sp XT chainset has been completely destroyed and you could just pull the pedal out.

Im only aware of one glancing rock strike, and i think its due to too much inept jumping on a a hardtail, with heavy pedal loads when landing. I have a spare bike so we can still ride this next week.

Other than being rubbish, have i done anything wrong? Is an xt crank the wrong tool for the job? Should u get a zee or saint with steel pedal inserts?

Can my otherwise lovely chainset be reused? Could it be tapped and used by a tiny person as a short arm chainset?

Thanks

Ian

Helicoil ... I expect. But probably not in Les Gets

Try

https://www.lesgets.com/au-boitet-de-yannos-1.html

sells second hand parts and repairs and is opposite the chairlift entrance

and

http://jaffvtt.fr/

who may also be able to assist you.

I think the XT chainsets are mostly hollowtech ones so making a new pedal hole may not be possible....

I did same issue to a 105 l/h crank on a hire road bike last week in Malaga. Went over a drain cover had a bit of a slide but didn’t come off next thing pedal hanging loose. Only thing I can think of is that I hadn’t tightened it fully and there was a bit of slack which allowed the threads to strip with some lateral pressure either that or my awesome power output.

Probably - there are repair inserts available:

If you are still in need when you get home, ping me as I have such a kit.

Same thing happened to me at the end of the PDS last year. Did the ride back from Morzine into Les Gets on one pedal. Lesson learnt - check pedal is good and tight before each days riding.

Went and saw Jaff and bought and nought a non series 170mm crankset which he fitted for me. Reasonable prices considering it's the Alps and a nice bloke to boot.

Given it’s not a hugely expensive crank I’d be tempted to just buy a new one....see what’s in a sale and what’s robust.

Same thing happened to my mate in Morzine the other week. Alan’s in Morzine helicoiled it for him. Think it cost €30

Aren't people on here always saying how you don't need to tighten pedals up much as they self tighten by design?

Personally I snug then up to torque after buggering up a new crank back in the 90's.

Did this years ago on hols in Utah/Colorado. Pedal thread stripped halfway around Slickrock. Put it down to dodgy threads on the rental bike as they're having pedals swapped all the time. Anyway, a bike shop in Moab swapped it FOC for a crank off one of their rental bikes.
