Why do chain pins now days have a very small outside edge to them which only gets sheared off when pushing the pin out. Seems like a trivial thing that shouldn't matter but having just broken the chain whilst pedalling, I see its broken at that same link.

Old 8 speed chains don't have these daft edge bits!

Is it because joining chains with pins is daft and hardly anyone does it any more?

I use quick links when out and about, but when doing home maintenance will reuse the same link. Not had an issue as far as I'm aware. I can't imagine the little shoulder has much strength in it to make a difference. I am very careful to ensure the link is in properly and not protruding more on one side than the other.

Thanks yeah it's a strange one - I notice old Sachs chains don't have these little outside edges but both my KMC 10 spd ones do. Both chain tools I have strip the pin edge off.
