funnily enough, i hadn't considered adjustments of any kind. i was hoping that someone might be able to advise of a suitable jedi mind trick to bamboozle it into behaving.

When I went double & bash I increased chainwheel size from 32T to 36T and this meant chain running higher in FD cage, where it is narrower. So, no matter how much adjusting it would rub at one end of the cassette or 'tother - or both! Raised the FD a little, so chain is back in a wider part of the cage, and its now much better. Might be worth a try...

i'm only running a 32 and i have tried running the fd higher but in order to avoid the rub, it needed to be so high that i had rub from the inner ring on the bottom of the cage.

thanks for the suggestion though.

what chainset are you running and what mech ? could be a chain line issue.

Go 1x10 ๐Ÿ˜‰

Seriously though, stop and have a look at the mech. The cage should be a few mm higher than the outer's teeth when it is pushed to that gear. Once you have set the mech height, check the H and L screw. Start with the L, placing the rear mech in the lowest (1) sprocket at the back and adjust till there is no rub. In the highest (9) sprocket at the back, check the H screw. Then adjust cable tension as required.

Alternatively, MTFU and go 1x10. ๐Ÿ™‚

The front mech needs to be at the same height as if you were running a triple because all the contours are set up to allow it to shift properly and to run quietly. If you keep a close eye on it while turning the cranks on a workstand you'll see what I mean.
Move it up until the chain runs in that "hollow" and you'll achieve Nirvana.

As above, check the H + L screws & the cable tension. If it still doesn't want to play, check the angle that the mech is at and its height on the seat tube.

From my limited experience I'd say that BigJohn has it.
You want to be only just high enough to allow the chain to use the widest section of the mech when on the bigger chainring.
Worked for me with a bit of trial and error when going from 22-32-44 to 22-36
