Is it Shimano or are there any cheaper, better or more rugged makes out there?

You can't do better than Deore for the money. They last well too.

the steel shimano ones are worth while (deore and some LX were), but not the std ali XT M760 ones... dunno about the 'newer' steel/carbon composite XT M770 ones though.

Got some Race Face ones on my XT Chainset, work well - wee bit cheaper and apparently they're supposed to last longer.

we do the alivio steel ones here;

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Shimano-Shimano-Alivio-Set-3-104-64-PCD-4-Arm-Chainrings-28-38-48T--Steel-Inner-Middle-and-Outer-19004.htm

but you'll need hoys legs for those off road so ill have a mince around tomorrow and see if we have any of the 22 32 44 ones to make them a product line.
